My Diligence - The Matter, The Form and Power

It’s hard to follow up on a masterpiece, even an overlooked one. My Diligence’s 2019 album, “Sun Rose,” was a brilliant shot of Metalgaze, exactly the right blend of power and melody. It should have taken the world by storm; people should have been taking days off of work and canceling plans with friends just to have more time to listen, but alas, it remained a sleeper hit.

My Diligence are back now in 2022 with their follow-up, “The Matter, The Form and Power,” which delivers triumphant riffs, melodies, and atmosphere galore. They’re still bringing the fire with their patented style-melds of Hum, Helmet, Smashing Pumpkins, Torche, Lo Pan, etc. Reverb and echo bring a Metal dreamy edge to everything. It’s amazing just how much power My Diligence muster with only three band members; I give a lot of credit to their larger-than-life riffs, as well as to their drums, which are actively engaged and always in the pocket. That’s how you do a power trio, folks.
I’m not crazy about the addition of harsh vocals to their sound, however. I don’t think this new feature ever works for MD, but thankfully it’s used very sparingly; they overwhelmingly favor the clean pipes. Otherwise, this album only falters when held up against “Sun Rose.” The best songs here are destroyers, but would only be the third or fourth best if they’d been on their debut. Don’t call it a sophomore slump, however, because this record is still loaded with victories. Some of these songs will stop you in your tracks; see “On the Wire” and “Multiversal Tree,” with their masterful transitions of moods and changes, flitting acrobatically between the ethereal and the Heavy AF.
The world needs to stop sleeping on this band. My Diligence have released two albums now of great music; they deserve more attention and bigger stages. Open your mind and give this band a fair shot. Start with “Sun Rose,” but absolutely continue on to “The Matter, The Form and Power.”
