I find myself hanging on Rose Heater’s voice and every word. She brings incredible magnetism, empathy, and vulnerability to the vocals, emphasising what’s already there in the music. She mostly delivers a softer timbre, but occasionally belts it out, sacrificing nothing of power or emotion. “Grey” does this masterfully; the verses keep a calm face over boiling anxiety, which overruns and releases explosively in the choruses.

Their sound is kinda like when the lead character in the movie is in a band, and they turn out to actually rock. It’s like that music. The drums are busy and heavy throughout, but the guitars walk the border between Alternative and Metal for much of the record. They play actively through a lot of notes, rarely indulging in big resonant chords. The heavy sections of the title track are powerful, echoing Hum. The riff and groove that kicks off at about the 2-minute mark is just bloodthirsty. I only wish it went on longer and came back.
“Red Moon” - - another that recalls heavy Hum - - may be the best on the album, but there’s really not a bad track among the 6*. Opener, “River,” is probably the least compelling of them, but even it is still pretty good.
One other interesting feature: Cavern have solved the question of outros: just don’t have them. Every song ends abruptly.
*It’s a full-length album with only 6 songs. It feels almost like an EP, but I recognize that the definition of “Album” has changed in recent years - - and this isn’t the place to debate or discuss it.
