Barrens - Penumbra

Label: Pelagic Records
Format: Download
Released: 2020
Reviewed By: Jack Mangan
Rating: 8.5/10

Smart Metal instrumentals for superbrains.
Think Explosions in the Sky, Caspian, The Album Leaf. The synths add a subtle retro 8-bit touch of Kyle Dixon (Stranger Things), Daft Punk, Mitch Murder, Supercopter - - but this is still primarily a guitar-driven effort.

As is almost always the case with song-focused band instrumental albums - - as opposed to virtuoso-focused superstar albums - - “Penumbra” is destined for underground appreciation and respect only, far from the mainstream spotlight. Don’t hold out for the Barrens guest appearance on daytime or late night talk shows.
But worthy of respect this is. By its nature, even for us geeks who dig “Penumbra,” it will mostly be enjoyable background score for our day-to-day. But the meticulous songsmanship and construction are evident, for those who take the time to listen.
Highlights: “Atomos,” “The Passing,” “Umbra.”
