Clean-voiced modern Doom, lining up with contemporaries The Sword, The Necromancers, Arcana 13, Greenleaf, et al. On “Divided by Darkness,” Spirit Adrift also incorporate elements of Iron Maiden - - specifically the prominent bass and guitar harmonies - - along with some Classic Rock/Classic Metal touches of “Animals” Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath. But wait, there’s more! Spirit Adrift also draw clear influences from Thrash bands heavier than them, especially “Kill Em All”/”Ride The Lightning” Metallica, “Legacy”/”The New Order” Testament, and classic Slayer. At different times throughout “Divided By Darkness,” I was reminded of “Burnt Offerings” by Testament, “Dead Skin Mask” by Slayer, and “Dogs” by Pink Floyd - - the latter recalled during excellent instrumental finisher, “The Way of Return.”

Don’t get the wrong impression. Spirit Adrift are certainly not derivative, they just wear their influences on their sleeves. There’s a lot to like on “Divided by Darkness,” from the confidently active bass to the vocals, but if I could only commend one thing, it would be the guitar solos. In lieu of fast-forward-speed shredding, guitarist Jeff Owens and guitarist vocalist Nathan Garrett deliver fat Bluesy leads that you can sing along to. Spirit Adrift do their hometown of PHoenix AZ proud.
Standout tracks: “Hear Her,” “Angel and Abyss,” “We Will Not Die,” and “The Way of the Return.”
