Lucifer's Hammer - Beyond The Omens

Label: Shadow Kingdom
Format: CD Download
Released: 2016

Debut from high speed Chilean traditional metallers, three years in the making, since Shadow Kingdom stumbled onto their demo. With moniker chosen from the Warlord tune of the same name, none too surprising, the musical style. However, despite trying to sing in an elevated register, the (limited) vocalist is no Damien King, I or II. Those deficiencies are most evident on the oddball tracks, ‘Nightmares’, an atypical paean to the sounds of the 80s Sunset Strip. However, like any diamond in the rough, the value is in polishing, like ‘Black Mysteries’, which opts for multi-tracked vocals and dual guitar interplay, fleshing out the sound.

A rollicking ‘The Hammer of the Gods’ kicks off the eight tracks, with a hint of Iron Maiden, right into the well constructed, drum & guitar begun signature tune: an instrumental. ‘Shining Blade’ and ‘Warriors’ are mid-tempo examples seemingly deleted from original era pressings of Metal Massacre,or similar minded compilations. Trying for a bigger sound, there's a synthesized strings intro to the title track finale, which ultimately closes with a recurrent, more progressive voiceless interlude. Hope to hear more from the South Americans.
