Heroes! Goblins! Lasers! Eagles! Wizards! Robots! Dwarven Caverns! Battling Space Armies! No, this is not a ComiCon geekgasm, it's a pulp Sci-Fi Power Metal extravaganza. Gloryhammer's second album, "Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards," delivers on all of the wondrous cheesiness and fast gallop metal grandeur that the title promises. This album is a hoot. The lyrics and concept, set in the futuristic year of 1992, come across as the frenzied notebook scrawls of a 12-year-old in 1977, fresh from his first theater viewing of Star Wars. The band treads delicately on the edge of a hammer, striking the fine line between melodramatic goofiness and clever satire.

If Blind Guardian are akin to the J.R.R. Tolkien of this Euro-accented metal genre, then Gloryhammer appear poised to become its' Terry Pratchett, combining skilled craftsmanship with fun and satire. Their delivery is straight-faced enough to hide their tongues in their cheeks. . . . (That is, unless they're actually deadly serious with this material and have me fooled. . .) The Flash-Gordon-meets-80s-montage-theme sections bring the hokiness to over boil at times ("Universe on Fire" is the best example of this), but it fits the act, and so is forgivable. I understand that Gloryhammer are in G.W.A.R.-style character and costume to play out the albums' storylines for their live performances (presumably not quite as X-rated as G.W.A.R., though); this seems like something that must be seen.

The strong material on "Space 1992 " is very strong, and plentiful enough. ‘Questlords of Inverness Ride to the Galactic. . .’ (seriously, how long is this song title?), ‘Heroes (Of Dundee)’, ‘Rise of the Chaos Wizards’, and ‘Apocalypse 1992’ are recommended tracks. ‘Victorious Eagle Warfare’ is required listening.

Go out and stream it right now. Deceptively simple, it's easily one of the best songs released in 2015. Fans of Speculative Fiction can find plenty to appreciate here, but otherwise, there's not much musical crossover potential. Gloryhammer's second release is a thrilling success, albeit one that will resonate with Metal audiences only.
