Mournful, crushing tempo, whispered lyrics, violin and closing acoustic guitar solo: that’s just in the 6:23 titular opening track on this four song sampler from the doom obsessed Brits. In stark contrast to the fading strains of un-amplified six-string, ‘Var Gud Over Er’ jumps right into bark, guttural voices and aggressive, fully electrified band mode. At 8:48, there’s plenty of time for a tempo change, or two, the Brides always being something of stylistic chameleons, before returning to their morose mannerisms. Big, ploddingly, heavy power chords and more violins characterize ‘A Pale Shroud Of Longing’, a great MDB title, indicative of the sound therein. Short, by their standards (at 4:20), ‘Only Tears To Replace Her With’ sees frontman Aaron Stainthorpe employing his familiar emotive spoken voiceover, start to finish, the music (gloriously) never rising above a sorrowful fugue.
