Pushking - The World As We Love It

Interesting way to introduce Western audiences to this long running Russian outfit, re-record 19 career spanning tracks, each with a well known vocalist (Alice Cooper, Udo, Paul Stanley, etc.) and/or guitarist (Vai, Lukather, Bettencourt, Stevens, etc.). The roster is a veritable hard rock/metal who's who Hall Of Fame and many of the tunes seem tailor-made for their guests, never straying too far from 80s inspired hard rock (apart from the odd countrified song). Sort of fun trying to pick out the vocal spots without the program: Cooper is easily discernable, as are Jorn Lande and the former Accept singer (who has spent a lot of time playing in Russia with his band U.D.O.), each one of the (all too infrequent) better inclusions. The acoustic and nearly a cappella 'Why Don't You' sees Glenn Hughes scat-erwaulling atop a minimalistic ballad. Hughes shows up again, alongside guitarist Joe Bonamassa, on the mellow blues of 'Tonight'.

Overall, too much mid-to-slow paced material (chief offender, a piano accompanied 'Letter To God') to feel like the celebration it reports to be. Neither Joe Lynn Turner, nor Jeff Scott Soto are afforded any quality material and Nazareth's Dan McCafferty, on the GnR 'November Rain' knock-off, 'I Love You', is almost painful!
