Alex Masi - Theory Of Everything

Ten instrumental tunes (although a couple of pre-recorded samples) from Italian guitarist, best known in metal circles for his Attack Of The Neon Shark or cheesy ‘88 Metal Blade hair metal video ‘God Promised A Paradise’. The current disc includes explorations into various styles/ideas. The titular opening number melts electronic effects, metallic shred and a jazz sensibility (pervasive throughout the platter), while ‘Ladies Of The House’ kicks off with a Middle Eastern flare, before settling into another “kool jazz” rhythm (complete with the occasional panting female).

Looking for a (rare) shredder, start-to-finish, try the aptly entitled ‘Queen Of Headfuck’, underpinned with a video arcade bass thump. By contrast, there’s a serene ‘The Past’. ‘Jam On Haunted Hill’ takes the kitchen sink, stylistic approach to songwriting, even including the oft utilized TV theme from Peter Gunn within its ranks. As does the funky ‘Have A Talk With God’. Nothing new in the solo guitarist, instrumental category, but lively enough to be enjoyed by most metalheads, even with the embellishments.
