Hawkwind – Blood Of The Earth

Label: Eastworld Recordings/Plastic Head North America
Format: CD Download
Released: 2010

Rating: 7.5/ 10 (if this if your thing)

With an extensive career that includes over 50 recordings that date back to the late 1960's, having over 10 video/DVD releases available and being the subject of numerous books, in signature Hawkwind fashion, “Blood of the Earth” takes the listener on a journey through the band's now classic mix of rock, doom-driven poetry, whimsical mantras and imaginative opera. All the band’s traditional elements are immediately established on the opening instrumental ‘Seahawks’ and the title track which includes a bit of spoken dialogue. Very artsy. It’s interesting how a 70s keyboard sound piggybacks the grinding riffage to space rocker ‘Wraith’ and ‘Green Machine’ is more 80s with a cleaner more New Wave keyboard melody and guitar lead. ‘Inner Visions’ includes fitting keyboard effects taking one to outer space and the stars. Middle Eastern sounds in ‘Prometheus’ will take the listener on a short carpet ride. ‘You'd Better Believe It’ has a bit of a Beetles influence in the harmonies.

No hooks or a memorable chorus here, people, just musical landscapes really, which is not a bad thing. You just have to like this type of Prog Art Rock.

Unique, but not my thing at all.
