Bullet For My Valentine – Fever

Label: Jive Records
Format: CD
Released: 2010

3rd album from these UK metalcore rockers which follows the path of their previous release "Scream Aim Fire". Bullet’s formula hasn’t changed much since the debut "The Poison", though they have evolved within their style, moving away from the excessive yelling (which the genre is notorious for). Yet, if you don’t like Matt Tuck’s straight forward bland, emotion-less (aside from the screaming) vocals, then "Fever" won’t change your opinion.

Opening three tunes ‘Your Betrayal’, ‘Fever’ has a solid chunky riff/rhythm, and ‘The Last Fight’ ease up on the harshness, producing more melodic tuneful vocals and lead work (ie: ‘Last Fight’). ‘A Place Where You Belong’ is more laid back, ‘Alone’ hits with a "Scream Aim Fire" punch. ‘Bittersweet Memories’ is one of those corny whiney Hot Topic numbers the kids would love at the Bamboozle summer festival in New Jersey. ‘Begging For Mercy’ sees the return of the yelled verse and it works well for the agitative riffing and harmonizing solo.

Bullet For My Valentine are one of the better bands (also see Trivium and Shadows Fall) from the current generation of modern millennium metal, combining thrash with more commercial sounds to achieve their crossover appeal. On the other hand, like many, with generic vocals they may just become another name. We shall see…
