Brain Drill - Quantum Catastrophe

Label: Metal Blade
Format: CD
Released: 2010
Reviewed By: Rich Catino
Rating: 5/ 10 (7/ 10 for technical ability and artwork)

Brain Drill…yet another brutal death metal name on the pioneering label, and I ask the question, why? Isn’t there enough extreme metal already?...especially in America. And Brain Drill are no different. Does the younger generation of metalheads really buy enough of this stuff for another melody-less death, grindcore, or metalcore band to land a deal, and with a major label no less? And to boot, already as it is Metal Blade’s roster is 90% growlers, barkers and screamers. It’s a shame, really, how the sounds of Lizzy Borden, Fates Warning, Brainstorm, and King Diamond (who really deserves a nice budget to present his stage show), just get lost in the crowd.

Anyway…what does Brain Drill sound like? Well, they have shared the stage with the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, The Black Dahlia Murder, Necrophagist, and Job for a Cowboy. Anymore questions?

Relentless riffing, pounding drums, cookie monster vocals, and plenty of technical guitar leads, deliver the Drill’s brain penetrating assault. Based on their ability, and a very good production, this is quality death metal. Anyone who is a fan of the genre will be surely pleased, and based only on that observation I would recommend checking this out. But personally, because of the redundancy and lack of any originality, I’m gonna pass.
