Jon Oliva’s Pain – Festival

Label: AFM
Format: CD
Released: 2010
Reviewed By: Rich Catino
Rating: 8.5 / 10

Fourth solo album from the Savatage /Trans Siberian Orchestra composer (here with JOP, Jon sings, plays piano, and guitar) who continues playing music in the spirit of the Tage for another musical journey only an Oliva can create.

‘Lies’ (which Jon’s late brother Criss gets writing credit) is a classic Savatage type rocker that would have fit nicely on the "Gutter Ballet" or "Streets" albums. ‘Death Rides A Black Horse’ is such an Oliva title, darker, and very ominous in the keyboards. With an excellent short mood setting intro, the title track (an Oliva/Oliva song) is a little more progressive and the keyboards back the riffs nicely. ‘Afterglow’ is a highlight, starting off in traditional Oliva fashion with guitars, bass, and drums, then seamlessly morphing into this grand piece with layered backing vocals for the chorus, changing back again for the verse, including some slide guitar and strings. Also love the jazzy piano/bass breakdown during the guitar solo. Champion! Clearly something Oliva could have done with producer Paul O’Neil during Savatage’s "Wake Of Magellan" period or with the Trans Siberian Orchestra. And ‘Living On The Edge’ (Oliva’Oliva) is obviously in the spirit of the "Sirens" album. 7:38 minute balladesque ‘Winter Haven’ will bring the heart back to those easy lazy days in the countryside regardless of the more riff based change mid way. ‘Now’ closes the album on a somber note given Jon’s vocal, the piano and strings.

More guitar oriented than the last album "Global Warning", front to back once again more great music from a massive talent, and unfortunately a reminder that Savatage have yet (and sadly may never) to make some new music.
