Steelwing - Lord Of The Wasteland

Label: NoiseArt
Format: CD
Released: 2010
Reviewed By: Mark Gromen
Rating: 7.5 /10

Debut from a young group of Swedes, formed just a year ago! Formerly known as Scavenger (but for how long, given their "newness"?), the album is destined for release via Nuclear Blast throughout continental Europe and this fall the band will support Blind Guardian on tour.

Like countrymen Wolf, Bullet, Enforcer and Portrait, these guys are enamored with the glorious sounds of traditional NWOBHM. After the ‘Enter The Wasteland’ intro, it’s right into ‘Headhunter’, a Maiden-ish gallop (circa the first two albums) with a vocalist capable of hitting stratospheric highs (particularly each concluding yelp or ‘Sentinel Hill’), although he tends to keep it mid-range. ‘Roadkill… Or Be Killed’ is a nice dual lead number, ditto ‘The Illusion’. Tolling bell sound effect, acoustic guitar outro and more high-end screaming can’t disguise the Maiden guitar solo within ‘The Nightwatcher’. ‘Point Of Singularity’ is delivered almost entirely in falsetto, yet oddly with an undertone of electronic modulated backing. Steelwing, one to watch, for sure!
