I am not one to just hand out 10's to anyone, but with this Norwegian band's long 14 year history, and this being the 8th album of their career, they deserve to be highly recognized for this effort. From the blackish metal opener ‘Havoc’ to the soft melodic closer ‘My Domain’ featuring the unmistakable guest vocals of ex-Dimmu Borgir/former band member of Borknagar, ICS Vortex (Simen Hestnaes).

"Universal" (the long awaited follow up to 2006's spectacular "Origin") is a non-stop tour-de-force of melancholy and absolute mayhem. With the musicianship of Oystein Games Brun on guitar and the powerful harsh or at times soft soothing vocals of the ever great Vintersorg (who sounds better then ever mind you), "Universal" is a contender for one of the top albums of 2010. Sub-par and substandard are definitely not even in Borknagar's category. This entire album pulls you in and doesn't let go until the very end. The pounding drumming of Malevolent Creation’s David Kincade only makes the album more enjoyable. On the track ‘Worldwide’ the lyrics and music are composed so well you'll find yourself singing the chorus in minutes.

The 2 bonus tracks on the special edition are amazing as also. The harmonizing vocal part at the end of ‘Loci’ that Vintersorg does is just great it should send chills down the spine. This record has everything a melodeath/black metal fan can want, tremelo picking, complex well put together riffs and solos, stellar bass lines, intricate keys and piano, tons of blast beats and at times a progressive feel to the music. I can't remember when but it's been some time since this great Norwegian band has hit US shores. Let’s hope that a tour is not out of the question cause when this beast gets released, US fans will be chanting for Borknagar and we hope they finally hear our call.
