Treat - Coup De Grace

Unlike so many similar situations, these resurrected 80s melodic Swedish metallers have no shortage of new material, offering 14 tracks on this, their first platter since 2001’s "Muscle In Motion". The titular prelude opens with a montage of great speakers/speeches of the 20th century. More hard rock than metal, but lacking the hair band theatrics/lyrical nonsense, Treat is closer to Bon Jovi than Motley Crue. Pop anthems bordering on hard rock, like the opening ‘War Is Over’ and gritty guitars on ‘Skies Of Mongolia’ demonstrate their best side. ‘No Way Without You’ is about as raucous as it gets, guitar driven but never foregoing that melodic sensibility.

On the other hand, at their worst, it sounds like a vanilla pop-metal 80s soundtrack (Nelson, Autograph, King Kobra, etc.). Witness the piano ballad ‘A Life To Die For’ or a by-the-numbers ‘We Own The Night’ power ballad.

Having been able to sustain a (on and off) career with or without my comments, surely this review won’t deter the faithful.
