Eluveitie - Everything Remains As It Never Was

Label: Nuclear Blast
Format: CD download
Released: 2010

This release follows last years acoustic album, "Evocation I", and proves to fans that these Swiss folk metallers are indeed back to their heavy sound, and then some. "Everything Remains" features more frequent vocals from Anna, who was the main voice on "Evocation I" but took that role only once on the last metal album, "Slania". Her voice is a good addition on several songs and adds another dimension to this already robust offering.

After a short intro passage, we are taken into ‘Thousandfold’ with its headbanging beat and strong melody. ‘The Essence of the Ashes’ boasts a strong melody as well – very anthemic with a bit of a "pirate" feel. Additional vocals from Keep of Kalessin vocalist Thebon are heard in ‘(Do)Minion’, though not too prominent. ‘Logdunon’, most likely adapted from an old folk melody, drags on a bit but does display some experimentation with different sounds in the instrumental bridge portion of the song.

The two most engaging tracks just happen to be the albums’ heaviest offerings. ‘Nil’ breaks out fast and heavy with piercing lyrics in the chorus as Chigrel screams "there is nothing left!". Even more brutal, ‘Kingdom Come Undone’ is a full throttle, pounding song that intertwines musical melodies with vocals lines in the way that Eluveitie does so well.

Nothing different or particularly inspiring about this release, but it’s still good solid folk metal that displays the diverse musical talents of this group. If you enjoyed "Slania" and are ready for more of the same, you should enjoy this disc.
