Overkill – Ironbound

"Ironbound" is Overkill’s thrashiest work since "Horrorscope" and "W.F.O.", incorporates a few schematics found on "Under The Influence", the dynamics of "Year’s Of Decay", fueled by the modern day sounds of "From The Underground and Below" and "Killbox 13".

With the album’s opening cut ‘The Green and Black’, a quiet bass (and yes, DD Verni’s trademark sound is all over the record) followed by the melodic guitar lead and drums build the necessary momentum for this crusher as the track goes through the usual classic Overkill peeks and valleys with its groovy rhythm, breakdown and shredfest solo section. ‘Ironbound’ is a hell of a second track and has one of the strongest Overkill riffs and driving rhythm sections I have heard in years. It’s a full throttle galloping pit churner with an excellent breakdown and dynamic tempo change pre guitar solo and Dave Links rips it up for his leads. Slammin!

‘Bring Me The Night’ is carried by a fun old school riff and backing vocal, will surely bring folks back to the days of L’amour in Brooklyn, NY. ‘The Goal is Your Soul’ is a fav, love the slow build up, mid paced thrash groove and progressive change for the plateau and solo, reminds a lot of something like ‘Birth of Tension’ or ‘Who Tends the Fire’ from "Years of Decay".

‘Give A Little’ goes back to records like "Necroshine" with its groove and backing vocals, ‘Head and Heart’ is dark and doomy as singer Bobby Blitz delivers a little lower range evil vocal (think ‘Death Comes Out To Play’ from "Bloodletting"). ‘Killing For A Living’ and ‘S.R.C.’ end the album on a high note with energy and a New Jersey thrash attitude you can’t deny.

Not taking shots at any other previous albums over the past fourteen years because all had their good songs, but "Ironbound" is clearly Overkill’s most cohesive in a long time and a feast for fans of their older material to dine on.
