Unanimated – In The Light Of Darkness

Since their beginnings in the early 90s and subsequently completing a couple demos, Sweden’s Unanimated have hit a couple detours along their path to darkness including lineup changes and members involved with other bands like Dismember, Entombed, and Dark Funeral.

Their first two albums - 1993's "In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead" and 1995's "Ancient God of Evil" were remastered and re-released in June 2008 with bonus tracks.

“In The Light” continues Unanimated’s quest for creating Black Metal in the spirit of fellow countrymen Mayhem, Marduk, and Dark Funeral with attention to raw power and hellish arrangements. What sets Unanimated apart from many though is their attention to melodic passages instantly heard in ‘Retribution in Blood’. Obviously the track is based in a traditional black metal composition but is nicely offset by the tempo changes and melodic lead guitar parts. It is all very well done. And unlike many who sing in this fashion, Unanimated make sure the vocal is not buried in the mix (overall between the instrumentation and voice the mix is well balanced) possessing a level of clarity and annunciation so you can hear what is being sung (or spewed). Bathory’s influence appears in the opening acoustic guitars for ‘Enemy of the Sun’.

Solid stuff from what is probably a relatively unknown name in the field.
