Memoira – Memoira

Label: Nightmare
Format: Download
Released: 2009

Female fronted metal from Finland (surprise!), kicks off with sporadic piano notes, male voiceover and symphonic strings, the ‘Arise’ intro feels like an outtake from Evergrey’s "The Inner Circle", but it’s the only such inclusion. Rather than opt for sounding like countrywomen Tarja Turunen, Amberian Dawn or Nightwish, Memoira aligns herself with outsiders, namely, the modern staccato riffage of Evanescence (‘Experimenters Farewell’) or the male accompanied Within Temptation (‘Haunted’).

‘Destiny Of Yours’ makes prodigious use of piano, as does follow-up, ‘Incurable’, but the latter is a punchy, upbeat number where synthesizers take over. ‘Shadow On My Name’ begins with male voice, which dominates throughout the post-Draconian Times shuffle of modern Paradise Lost. On ‘Half Alive’ her voice reminds me of Vonnie King, the standout of short-lived, melancholy Philly metallic-goths Fountain Of Tears (who contained Believer drummer Joey Daub within its midst).
