Ghost Brigade - Isolation Songs

Label: Season Of Mist Records
Format: CD
Released: 2009

Rating: 7/10

Two years on from “Guided By Fire”, the progressive tinged Finns deliver ten tracks that retain the qualities which made the debut so interesting, although the alternate gruff vocals (ala last few Opeth discs) has been greatly reduced (‘Architect Of New Beginnings’). As stated in my review of the earlier platter, certainly a major (albeit welcome) departure for Season Of Mist, more prog this time around, without the blatant Tool-isms. If it weren’t for the death metal-lite vox, could easily get confused with Nickleback or Creed styled indie-rock. The sound changes from song-to-song, even within the context of each: ‘Lost In The Loop’ features cello, staccato bass notes, soothing passages and gruff vocals at various points. About the only constant is ‘22:22 – Nihil’ an instrumental (but not of titular length).

A good album to put on at a party attended by non-metalheads, as enough for them to enjoy, without you getting annoyed by any lack of balls. Radio potential in spades, but it will never get there. Shame.
