Sodom – Sodom

Label: SPV
Format: CD
Released: 2006
Reviewed By: Rich Catino

I remember vividly buying Sodom’s "Obsessed by Cruelty" in the early eighties and thus discovering German thrash, the Lp cover is one of my most memorable from that time. Twenty years later Tom Angelripper keeps Sodom’s style true to their early beginnings among other classics like "Agent Orange" while always trying new subtle things within their field of metal.

With their self titled album Sodom are at their strongest most definitely because of their longest running consistent lineup of Tom still on bass and vocals, Bernemann on guitar and Bobby on drums. 'Blood on Your Lips', 'Wanted Dead', 'Bibles and Guns' (with a great solo), 'Lords of Depravity' (which is all go for the throat) are all well arranged, strong and thrashy with well written guitar leads. 'Axis of Evil' and 'No Captures' add the variety and are what 'Remember the Fallen' did for "Agent Orange" and 'The Saw is the Law' did for "Better off Dead". I will note also that this album contains some of Sodom’s best moment’s melody wise. They have really taken their time for this collection of songs making sure it was hard and fast but yet tuneful.

Definitely their best in the past ten years!
