Antiquus – Eleutheria

Label: Cruz Del Sur Music
Format: CD
Released: 2006
Reviewed By: Stingray

Antiquus hail from Vancouver Canada with their second release Eleutheria. Having been formed in 2000 with guitarist Jeff Dormer, bassist Scott Unger, drummer Andrew Bak, and vocalist Jesse White. Even though their first record "Ramayana" was independently released, the album and the band had received critic acclaim. Jeff Dormer took a break from the band, and they brought in two new guitarists, Trevor Leonard and Geoff Way. They caught the ear of Italy's Cruz Del Sur Music, who signed the band and has released "Eleutheria".

This disc is a "concept" telling a story of a ship voyage bringing images to my mind of Vikings and Nomads. Having only eight tracks, there is no shortage of Metal!

Upon listening to this Power and Progressive disc, I am reminded a little bit of Demons and Wizards, Blind Guardian, Helloween, etc. etc. However, they have a sound that is all their own.

I'm finding it hard to compare Jesse White's vocals to one particular voice. Throw in some Geoff Tate (Queensrcyhe), BruceDickinson (Iron Maiden), Rob Halford (Judas Priest) then add some Matt Barlow (Iced Earth) for good measure.

Either way, you'll feel like your ears want to bleed!

The disc starts out loud, strong, and in your face with ‘Part I - O Captain, My Captain’. ‘Part II – Eleutheria’ begins a little bit slower, but doesn't waste any time getting your blood back up. ‘Part III - Meta Incognita’ also includes spoken word and into a more acoustic, instrumental piece focusing more on harmony. Bringing us into ‘Part IV – Redemption’ starting with a "heartbeat" beat and then taking it back up a notch. ‘Part V - I Am Alive’, being harder slows for some more narration eight minutes in. The remaining "chapters" keep you interested. You may have to keep the disc on repeat and listen to it a few times to get the gist of the story, but I assure you, it's worth it!!

A must have for any Metal Fan!!
