Brainstorm – Liquid Monster

Label: Metal Blade
Format: CD
Released: 2005

Brainstorm are one of the Power Metal bands with the emphasis on the word “power”, similar in sound to say Tad Morose and Morgana Lefay. The above bands site similarities to other Power Metal bands but their music’s delivery has more of an edge, more metallic. Unlike others in the genre, and what people think is how all Power Metal bands use vocals (uhh I hate ignorance), the voice in Brainstorm is not high, here deeper in tone though still melodic. Yes, Brainstorm use double bass and have soaring chorus’ but with the heavier voice to Andy Franck you will not think of Helloween as many would pre assume.

‘Despair to Drown’ and ‘Lifeline’ are headbangers similar to ‘Doorway to Survive’ from their last effort “Soul Temptation” with fast guitars and drums moving it along. ‘Heavenly’ is a ballad with light but fitting orchestration followed by a mid paced ‘Painside’. Brainstorm have a way of combining a very melodic chorus and hook with heavy driven guitars. Musically they are very traditional with some progressive touches adding dynamics, an all around solid presentation.

These guys are a great face for the new generation of pure Heavy Metal in the spirit of Iron Maiden with the energy of Testament.
