Cans – Beyond the Gates

Label: Sanctuary Records
Format: CD
Released: 2004
Reviewed By: Rich Catino

On vocals Jocaim Cans (Hammerfall), guitars by Mike Chlasciak (Halford, Painmuseum and now Testament) and Stefan Elmgren (Hammerfall), Mat Sinner on bass(Primal Fear), and Mark Zonder (Fates Warning) on drums. Really do I need to say more.

The combination of these talents has equaled solid old fashioned traditional Heavy Metal that does not sound like any of their respective bands, well, maybe a little bit of Hammerfall at times, but you can’t help it with that voice. With that, you can’t complain because Jocaim Cans is one of the most well suited singers from this new generation of Metal masters, destined to be respected in time. Even if Hammerfall’s Euro style is not for you this may work for Power Metal non believers.

“Fields of Yesterday” sets the stage and was a perfect choice for an Mp3 single of sorts to give everyone a taste prior to its release. With mostly mid paced pounders, monsters riffs and solos are crafted accordingly between Mike and Stefan letting theirs styles shine forming a solid base. The title track creates mood, with warrior like backing vocals and dramatic keyboards.

“Dreams” has a different feel to it, something in the piano piece, a little 80’s feel and very singable chorus but don’t get too relaxed because “Signs” follows with riffing definitely written by Metal Mike.

I like the direction Jocaim took this solo project and even though some of this is part of Hammerfall I think more of it could benefit their formula. O yeah, the band name has got to go.
