Sinner – There Will Be Execution

Label: Nuclear Blast
Format: CD
Released: 2003
Reviewed By: Rich Catino

For those unaware of who Sinner are you have to go all the way back to the very early 80’s for albums like “Touch of Sin” and “Danger Zone”. They established the classic German metal scene back then with other legends in this style being Grave Digger & Running Wild, characterized by chainsaw crunchy guitars and chunky rhythms. Long time leader Mat Sinner is also part of another German outfit Primal Fear and yes there are obviously parallels between the two as far as guitar sound definitely, vocals are very different.

The latest Sinner cd finds them doing what they do best, creating no frills fist pounding metal. Mat is the singer and bass player, and his vocal quality compliments their sound being gritty and strong. “Higher Level of Violence”, “There Will Be Execution”, and “God Raises the Dead” are classic Sinner metal with a mid tempo flow and catchy riffs. Another side is heard on “Die on Command” and “Locked and Loaded” where the pace is a little slower without lacking in the meat department. “The River” has more melody and a commercial chorus which is ground familiar to their long history.

A couple of tracks are not as strong as others and I see as filler.

For the length of time the band has been around, as well as being in another successful project, it does not sound like Mat has run out of ideas for his long time baby, yet.
