There must be something in the water over there in Sweden as it seems like there are a lot of new great refreshing bands on the rise, One Man Army and the Undead Quartet being one of them. This band was formed by former the Crown front man Johan Lindstrand. The album opener “Killing Machine” has me thinking Testament and Exodus arrangement wise as well as some Carcass from the start which if you didn't know is a great thing. You are held hostage for the first two minutes of the song with incredible guitar arrangements before the vocals kick in. One issue I have right off the bat is the vocals. They are there and not terribly buried but they are indeed a little muffled down in the mix and could stand out more. As we move on to the second track “Devil on the Red Carpet” the vocal situation improves and stays that way the rest of the album. “So Grim So True So Real” is a relentless and punishing piece of thrash with just sick guitar work throughout reminding me of Reign in Blood era Slayer. Just when I think the album cannot get any better the closer “Bulldozer Frenzy” smashes into you like getting hit by a speeding truck. Listening to this track I just envision complete chaos in a live setting with an insane mosh pit going on while the band swings their heads in wild windmill fashion.
This album easily rivals the best work of the Crown and paves the way for a promising follow up. The band already has tours under their belt with Children of Bodom and Ektomorf late last year and earlier this year took part of the Metal Hammer sponsored “European Neckbreaker's Ball” 2006 tour with Hypocrisy, Soilwork, and Scar Symmetry. I feel One Man Army and the Undead Quartet have a lot to offer and will rise in the world of extreme metal. Kudos to the band for releasing an excellent debut album.
