Amon Amarth – With Oden on Our Side
Metal Blade
2006
CD

The seventh album from Sweden 's God's of Viking Metal is their strongest and best offering yet.  The album opener “Valhall Awaits Me” kicks off this awesome disc with a great guitar riff and thundering drums.  At the 3:20 mark the guitar work and flow is very classic metal sounding and a throwback to metals glory days.   Listening to this track you can imagine yourself in the middle of a battlefield in which chaos is about to ensue.  “Asator” is balls to the wall heavy thrash meets power metal ala Children of Bodom and is also my favorite track on the album.  The one thing I love about this band is while the vocal delivery is brutal you can actually understand what is being said compared to when you listen to something like Cannibal Corpse or Deicide and say “What the hell is going on here?”  “Cry of the Black Birds” features awesome guitar work throughout and has some really crushing moments.  “Under the Northern Star” has an Iron Maiden feel with its arrangements.

Overall this album is a lot more melodic than previous offerings and just very well crafted.  This formula works very well for the band and I feel they are ready to break big.  This winter the band heads back to the US shores as direct support for Children of Bodom.  Perhaps sometime next year the boys will be back to headline?  I think they are ready.  I saw them on the short lived Metal Gods tour with Immortal, Testament, and Halford and let me tell you the live show is very intense, you will not be able to control your headbanging once they take the stage.  "With Oden on Our Side" is one of 2006's better albums and will definitely become a staple for Amon Amarth.
