So UFO have a new lease on life once again with Vinnie Moore returning on guitar with this the second album featuring his work. You can hear it right from the first track “Hard Being Me” as it is classic 70's UFO while followed by a little harder grittier sounding “Heavenly Body” the guys want to let everyone know that just because they are getting older doesn't mean they lost their edge. Phil Mogg's voice remains unchanged really and he is still joined by bassist Pete Way and returning original drummer Andy Parker. The chemistry between everyone is very good and will more than appeal to the UFO purist.
Vinnie shows a lot of his heart and soul in the solos for the mellower tracks like “Some Other Guy” that also features some harmonic, “Drink too Much ” and “Who's Fooling Who”. I'm sure the question will be asked how does he match up to Schenker ? Well fear not because Vinnie is equally as talented and not only is cut from the same cloth of talents but he also brings his own bottle of finely aged wine to the table when it comes to contributing to a UFO song. Because anyone who knows about UFO melodic guitar leads and great bluesy based rock riffs (perfect examples “Black and Blue” and “Down by the River”) are so important to their distinctive sound, as are Phil's vocals and the compliments of those keyboards.
After 30 years of releasing albums “The Monkey Puzzle” does a fine job of retaining all the important classic elements of great UFO albums like “Lights Out”, “Obsession”, and “Phenomenon” and is worthy of purchase.
